Rural Reporter Linkage Initiative: This initiative connects qualified journalists in remote areas to urban media outlets that have previously been beyond their reach.  The journalists benefit in a professional capacity through increased visibility of their work and recognition by mainstream media outlets.  This encourages the journalists to continue to serve in remote areas.  Increased presence of the media in rural areas is beneficial to individuals and groups promoting human rights issues.  The human rights issues which arise in rural populations including poverty, land rights, and rights of indigenous people receive increased attention through this project component.  The public, made aware of these issues, can affect improvement through the democratic process.  By placing the issues in the public domain, pressure can be brought on civil leaders to take action.

Journalism Module for Secondary Schools: Journalism plays a critical societal role in bringing human rights issues to light and focusing public attention on injustices.  This academic module introduces students to the profession of journalism and highlights the role of journalists in civil society.  The lesson complements and extends the existing school curriculum.  Because of the module, some students may consider journalism as a career; but even for those do not, the career is presented as a respectable choice.  Students completing the course understand the utility of media exposure in addressing human rights issues.  These students are also primed to participate in other components of this project such as the camp or telecentre workshop.

Youth Journalism and Human Rights Camp:  The camp involves talented, motivated youth in an intensive programme that stresses not only the potential contribution of journalism to human rights causes, but gives students practical training in both traditional journalism and the more modern forms including video and internet-based media.  Students leave the camp with a basic understanding of how to write a news story, a press release and an editorial and take that knowledge back to their communities.  The camp format allows for greater exploration of specific human rights issues.

Media Telecentre Workshops: Students participants gain an understanding of the role of the press with regard to human rights issues.  They learn technology-based communications skills, allowing them to gather and disseminate information.  These IT skills are a benefit for any career, particularly one in the media or as an activist.  Students can apply and transfer these skills to school and community projects, extending the impact of the project. Media Professionals:  Media professionals learn to extend their skills through available technologies, making them better journalists and more effective communicators.  Through them, human rights status and events gain greater visibility, extending the benefit to vulnerable populations. Human Rights Advocates:  The workshop is designed to instruct human rights advocates, either individually or institutionally, in effective use of traditional and electronic media, including the internet.  Participants learn how to write for publication, how to prepare and distribute press releases and how to write editorials.  They also learn how to get their message out through email, web pages, and using audio/visual media.  Transitively, this training benefits the population served by the participants.

Localisation of Online Communication Tools : Localisation of blogging tools enables users to express themselves in Bengali, bypassing the linguistic barrier of English.  The project itself and its launching draw attention to the project and its human rights theme.  Given the marketing of these online tools, a portion of the created blogs address human rights issues, bringing them to broader attention.  The blog format encourages frequent updates and commenting, keeping the issues fresh and in the public eye.  In addition to this primary expectation, the project advances the state of the art for Bengali open source software development; the lexicon is useful for other projects which benefit the Bengali community.

Enabling Communication Technologies : Media and human rights organisations are able to gather human rights-related reports submitted at the field level by phone and fax.  These marginalised populations use available and inexpensive technologies to reach a broad audience.  Novelty of this project is an asset in promoting its use and visibility.
